Adult Learn to Curl

Discover the sport of curling with our full-season Adult Learn-to-Curl (LTC) program at the Cumberland Curling Club!

Spaces for our Learn-to-Curl program fill up quickly. Designed for absolute beginners and those returning to the sport, our program is split into two halves to give you the perfect balance of instruction and real game play in a friendly, supportive environment:

  • First Half (October to December): Experience a structured 10-week lesson plan following the Curling Canada curriculum plus a little extra! You will master the fundamentals—from rock delivery and sweeping techniques to the strategy of "skipping" a game through interactive off-ice presentations and on-ice clinics.

  • Second Half (January to March): Put your new skills into action! You will transition into an instructional league exclusively for Learn-to-Curl participants, playing full games with on-ice coaches nearby to guide your strategy, etiquette, and development.

Equipment Requirements & Recommendations

The club provides plenty of brooms, sliding crutches, and delivery sticks on-site for all participants.

  • Curling Shoes: For maximum stability, safety, and enjoyment, all participants in this program require curling shoes. If you are brand new and want to try a week or two before buying, you may start with a perfectly clean pair of indoor running shoes (used exclusively for the ice) paired with slip-on grippers and a slider.

  • Helmets: Safety first! While not mandatory for adults, wearing a protective helmet is highly recommended to protect against falls. The club has a very limited number of adult helmets available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.

Here are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about our Learn to Curl Program

Q: Do I really need to buy curling shoes, or can I just use regular running shoes?

A: For your safety, stability, and enjoyment, all full-season LTC participants require curling shoes. If you are completely new to the sport, you may use a pair of perfectly clean indoor running shoes paired with our slip-on grippers and sliders for the first week or two while you figure out your setup.

    Q: I don't know if I'm a right-handed or left-handed curler. What should I do?

A: Don't stress! That is exactly what our opening week is for. If you are in doubt about what equipment to buy or how you deliver, please contact Jeff Clark at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before purchasing any gear.

Q: What is the difference between Session 1 and Session 2?

A: Session 1 (October to December) focuses strictly on curling fundamentals using the Curling Canada curriculum, on-ice clinics, and off-ice presentations. Session 2 (January to March) shifts entirely into an interactive instructional league where you play real games against fellow beginners with coaches on hand to help guide strategy.

Q: Is a helmet required for adults?

A: Helmets are not mandatory for adults at our club, but they are highly recommended for extra protection against unexpected falls. The club has a very limited number of adult helmets available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: Do I need to register with a complete team?

A: Not at all! The vast majority of our Learn-to-Curl participants sign up as individuals. We will group you into balanced teams during both the clinics and the second-half instructional league. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people at the club.

Q: What happens if I have physical limitations or trouble bending down to throw a stone?

A: Curling is an incredibly accessible sport! We have delivery sticks and sliding crutches available on-site. Stick curling allows you to deliver the rock from a standing or upright position, completely eliminating strain on knees and backs.

Q: Can I try a session before committing, or cancel my registration later if it’s not for me?

A: Because our Learn-to-Curl program is in exceptionally high demand and spaces fill up quickly, we are unable to offer trial sessions. If you are considering registering but are unsure about your schedule or commitment, please carefully consult our club's Refund Policy before completing your registration.
